Variable editions refers to the large colour prints on the first page. Variable because they are so difficult to print and impossible to keep consistant. Most will have been discarded. The black and white prints are easier to keep consistant, though there are slight variations in the tonal values as one always tries to extract the best possible result from each plate. All the images are drawn directly onto copper plates, though wax resists, and then etched into the metal using various mordents. Once printed the plate will be modified until the final image is arrived at. No photographic processes or AI are involved. The process is explained in greater detail in the about etching. page. ↑
